Why is the rug in my AI render the wrong size?

Short answer

Because an image model sizes the rug to balance the picture, not to fit your furniture. It has no floor dimensions, so it draws a rectangle that looks calm inside the frame, which in practice means a rug too small for the seating group with the sofa hovering half on and half off it. Real rugs come in three decisions: all legs on, which needs about 240 x 340 cm for a three-seater and two chairs, front legs on at roughly 200 x 300 cm, or a deliberate small rug under the coffee table alone. The rug should be wider than the sofa and should stop 20 to 45 cm short of the walls. Renders also ignore pile height, so they put 20 mm shag under doors that clear the floor by 8 to 15 mm. A rug is a colour and a rectangle. AI is good at the colour and has no idea about the rectangle, and because the render looks finished, most people never notice which half they were sold.

Why the size comes out wrong

  • There is no floor. Image models do not hold dimensions. They produce a plausible arrangement of pixels, so the rug ends up the size that makes the photograph look settled, which is usually smaller than the seating group needs.
  • The training data is full of the same mistake. Undersized rugs are the most common decorating error in real homes, and real homes are what these models learned from. The floating island under the coffee table is not an invention, it is an average.
  • The camera lies about floors. Renders are often composed from a raised, wide angle that stretches the floor plane. A rug that looks generous from that viewpoint is noticeably mean from a sofa.
  • Thickness does not exist. Pile height, underlay and total build-up are physical properties with no visual equivalent in a flat image, which is why renders cheerfully place deep pile under doors and dining chairs.

The sizes that are actually decisions

  • All legs on. Every piece of furniture stands on the rug. For a three-seater with a pair of chairs that means roughly 240 x 340 cm. The calmest look and the most expensive.
  • Front legs on. The normal answer in a normal room, usually around 200 x 300 cm. The rug still has to be wider than the sofa, ideally by 15 to 30 cm each side.
  • The coffee table island. A small rug with everything else on bare floor. Defensible in a very small flat, and a mistake almost everywhere else.
  • Leave a margin. Stop the rug 20 to 45 cm short of the walls so a frame of floor shows. Edge to edge reads as failed fitted carpet.
  • Dining rooms. Table plus 60 to 75 cm on every side, or a chair drops off the edge every time somebody stands up.
  • Hallways. A runner sits 10 to 15 cm short of the skirting on each side, so a 90 to 100 cm hallway wants something around 70 to 80 cm wide, stopped short of any door swing.

Before you order, put masking tape on the floor in the exact rectangle and leave it there for a day. Walk the route from the door, pull a dining chair out, and swing the door that passes over it: internal doors usually clear the floor by only 8 to 15 mm, so a shag pile plus underlay will stop it dead. Can I ask the AI for a specific rug size and get it?

You can type the number and the model will not use it, because there is nothing in the image for a centimetre to attach to. What you can do is generate two versions, one described as a small rug and one as a large one, and use them to decide which look you want. Then take the measurement from your own room.

Is the rug colour in the render accurate?

Directionally, yes, and that is the useful part. The render bakes the room's lighting into the colour, so expect the real rug to be duller in a dark room and warmer under evening lamps. Use it to choose between light and dark, warm and cool, plain and patterned, and order a sample before committing to a specific shade.

Why do the patterns in AI rugs look strange?

Because a woven pattern has structure that repeats and mirrors across the whole rug, and image models generate locally, one plausible detail at a time. Look at the border: if it changes width, fades out, or turns a corner into a different motif, you are looking at a texture rather than a product.
