Can AI tell me how high to hang my pictures?

Short answer

No. An image model has no floor plane and no scale, so the height it draws is a composition decision inside a rectangular picture, which is why AI art almost always ends up too high on a real wall. Use three numbers instead. The centre of a piece, or of a whole group treated as one rectangle, goes at about 145 to 150 cm from the floor, which is standing eye level and what galleries use. Over a sofa, console or bed, keep the bottom edge 15 to 25 cm above the furniture, and let that win when the two rules disagree. Between frames, pick one gap of 5 to 8 cm and use it everywhere, with the outer edges of the block aligned. A television sits lower, 100 to 110 cm to the centre, because you are sitting down. Renders are good at deciding what goes on a wall and bad at deciding where. Both halves feel like the same question when you are looking at the picture, and only one of them leaves holes in your plaster.

Why AI hangs art too high

  • A picture has no floor. The model balances shapes inside the image frame, and a composition usually looks calmer with the art nearer the middle of that frame. On a 240 cm wall, the middle of the frame is well above human eye level.
  • No scale, no measurements. There is nothing in an image model that a centimetre attaches to, so any height you infer from a render is a guess dressed up as a plan.
  • Training data skews grand. Oversized canvases hung high photograph beautifully in magazines, so that is what the models saw. In a normal room with a normal ceiling, it reads as art that floated away from the furniture.
  • Hardware is invented. Frames sit flat with no visible fixing, wires float, heavy mirrors hang from nothing. The top edge of any hung object is where the model has the most freedom and the least training signal.

The numbers to use instead

  • 145 to 150 cm to the centre. Single piece or whole group, treated as one rectangle. This is the rule galleries use and it fixes most bad walls on its own. High ceilings do not change it: art relates to people, not to the cornice.
  • 15 to 25 cm above the furniture. Over a sofa, bed or console, this keeps the art and the furniture reading as one composition. If the two rules fight, follow the furniture.
  • 5 to 8 cm between frames, consistently. The exact number matters much less than using the same one everywhere and aligning the outer edges of the block.
  • Two thirds of the width below. Size the group to about two thirds of the sofa or console width. A small frame stranded over a three-seater is the most common real-world error.
  • A television goes lower. Centre at 100 to 110 cm, because you watch it sitting down.
  • Up a staircase, follow the pitch. Keep each piece about 145 cm above the nose of the tread beneath it, so the run climbs at the angle of the stairs.

The measurement people actually get wrong is the hook, not the picture. A hanging wire pulls up 5 to 10 cm once it takes the weight, so mark the hook that far below the top edge of the frame rather than level with it. And check what you are drilling into: a pin hook in plasterboard holds a few kilograms at most, and a heavy mirror needs a toggle fixing or the stud behind the board. What is AI actually useful for here?

Choosing the arrangement, which is the part that keeps walls empty for years. One large piece, a grid of six, an asymmetric cluster or a long horizontal run, all shown on your own wall above your own sofa. It also handles frame finish against your wall colour well, since that is a colour judgement in your own light.

How do I check a gallery wall layout before drilling?

Lay the frames out on the floor first and shuffle until the gaps look even. Then cut paper rectangles the size of each frame, tape them to the wall, and live with it for an evening. Look from the doorway and from where you actually sit. Mark the hook positions on the paper, and drill through the template.

Do the frames all have to match?

No, but the group needs one thing in common: the same frame colour, the same mount, or the same kind of image inside mixed frames. Renders mix five finishes at once because it photographs as eclectic. In a real room that usually reads as a pile of things that arrived separately.
