Can AI interior design tell me if a plant will survive where it puts it?

Short answer

No, and this is the one place where an interior render can cost you something living. To an image model a plant is a shape that fills an empty corner and adds a colour the scheme was missing, so it places greenery wherever the composition needs it. The corner it reaches for most often is the one furthest from the window, which is reliably the darkest square metre in the room, and a large plant put there will drop its lower leaves within a couple of months. Three related errors come with it: renders invent species by blending leaf shapes across genera, they show plants at nursery maturity you cannot buy cheaply at that size, and they draw sealed pots with no drainage hole because a hole is not visible from the camera. Almost every houseplant failure is a light failure, and indoor light falls off with distance from the window far faster than it looks like it should. A spot half a metre from the glass and a spot two and a half metres back are not both "near the window". They are different climates, and a render treats them as the same wall.

The bands that decide it

  • Up to about half a metre from the glass. The strongest position in the room. Cacti, succulents, herbs and most flowering plants want to be here.
  • Half a metre to about a metre and a half. Bright indirect, and where most of what a shop sells actually belongs: monstera, ficus, calathea.
  • A metre and a half to about three metres. Low light. Sansevieria, zamioculcas and pothos will persist here rather than grow.
  • Beyond three metres, or any windowless spot. Nothing lives here for long without a grow light, whatever the render says.
  • Knock everything down a band for a north-facing window, a balcony overhang, a tree outside or a net curtain, and again for a plant sitting off to one side of the opening rather than in front of it.

The other three errors renders make

  • Invented species. Look closely and you will find monstera fenestrations on the wrong stem, a rubber plant with fiddle leaf shape, a palm with an impossible trunk. You cannot go and buy that plant, and the real one you buy will have a different silhouette and density.
  • Nursery maturity. Renders show plants at their catalogue best, full and symmetrical, at a size grown over years under glass. What arrives is smaller, sparser and one-sided. If the composition depends on a large specimen, price that size before committing.
  • Pots with no drainage. A hole in the base is invisible to a camera so it does not exist to the model. The real answer, and what designed rooms actually do, is a plastic nursery pot inside a decorative cover pot. As a proportion guide, the pot wants to be about a third of the plant's total height, and repotting goes up one size, not three.

Two more filters worth applying before the design conversation rather than after. Weight: a 30 cm terracotta pot with damp soil is easily 12 to 15 kg, which matters on a shelf or a rented balcony. And pets: monstera, pothos, philodendron, dieffenbachia and lilies are all staples of interior photography and all a problem in a house with a cat or a small child, lilies seriously so.

Used the right way round, the render is still worth generating. Work out your bands first, then ask the tool to place greenery only in positions that survive, and judge the composition it gives you. You are using it as a stylist working inside your constraints rather than as an oracle about your room. Why does AI always put a big plant in the darkest corner?

Because that corner is a compositional hole and every design image the model learned from fills holes with greenery. It has no concept of light reaching that spot. The honest options for a corner three metres from the window are a floor lamp, tall storage, a large piece of art, a genuinely low-light plant that will merely persist, or a plant plus a grow light.

How do I measure how much light a spot gets?

Pace it out from the window and use half a metre, a metre and a half and three metres as your boundaries, then downgrade for aspect and obstruction. If you want to be more exact, a light meter app on a phone is unreliable in absolute terms but perfectly good at comparing two spots in the same room on the same day, which is the comparison that matters.

Is AI useful for plants at all?

Yes, for the questions with visual answers. How many plants a room carries before it reads as cluttered, how large a statement plant should be against your ceiling height, and whether terracotta, matte black, concrete or a woven basket suits the room. Cover pots are one of the cheapest levers in a room and seeing them in your own space is a fair test.
