Why does AI delete the radiator from my room render?

Short answer

Because a radiator is the ugliest object in most rooms and image models are trained to produce attractive pictures, so the model paints clean wall where the radiator was. That single deletion is expensive, because a radiator does not just occupy wall, it reserves the air in front of it. A render with the radiator gone will happily park a sofa back, a wardrobe or a bed head against the one stretch of wall that is already spoken for. The working numbers: keep furniture at least 10 to 15 cm clear of the face of a panel radiator, more like 25 to 30 cm for anything with a solid back, never sit a thermostatic valve behind a curtain or inside a cabinet because it reads trapped hot air and shuts the radiator down while the room stays cold, and treat a boxed-in radiator cover as a real loss of output rather than a styling choice. Ask an AI tool to restyle your living room and there is a good chance you get back a beautiful image of a room you do not own, because somewhere in the process the radiator quietly stopped existing. It is the most consistent small lie in AI interior design, and it costs more than any wrong cushion ever will.

Why it vanishes

  • It is the least photogenic object in the house. The model learned from styled interiors, magazine shoots and renders, where radiators are hidden, cropped out or genuinely absent. A clean wall is the statistically normal thing for it to draw.
  • Inpainting fills holes with the easiest answer. When a tool repaints a wall, the cheapest plausible continuation of plaster is more plaster. A radiator is a hard object with pipes, brackets and a valve, so it gets smoothed away.
  • Much of the training data is from homes without them. A very large share of interior photography comes from housing stock with ducted air rather than wet central heating. The model has simply seen fewer radiators than you have.
  • You asked for a nicer room. Every prompt about warmth, calm and minimalism pushes towards a scene with less hardware in it. Deleting the radiator is the model doing what it was asked.

What the wall was already doing

  • Clearance in front, not just the width. Leave 10 to 15 cm of open air in front of a panel radiator as a minimum. A sofa with a solid back or a bed pushed against it wants 25 to 30 cm, otherwise you are heating upholstery and the room takes noticeably longer to come up to temperature.
  • The thermostatic valve is the trap. A TRV measures the air immediately around itself. Hide it behind a floor-length curtain, a sofa arm or a boxed cover and it sits in a pocket of hot air, decides the room is warm, and closes. The room stays cold and the valve is behaving correctly.
  • A radiator cover is a real cost. Boxing a radiator in reduces its useful output, typically by something in the region of a fifth, and more if the grille is fine and the top is solid. Sometimes worth it. Never free, and never a decision a render has weighed.
  • Curtains change the arithmetic. Floor-length curtains hanging over a radiator send its output up the back of the fabric and into the glass. That is the constraint behind the sill and apron drops covered in why curtains in AI renders hang wrong.
  • Pipework fixes the position. The radiator is where the flow and return come up through the floor. Moving it is a plumbing job with lifted boards, not a styling tweak, and a vertical replacement usually also means recalculating the output in watts for that room.
  • Hallways lose the most. A radiator projecting 6 to 10 cm from the wall of a 100 cm hallway is the pinch point for every piece of furniture you ever carry through, which is the arithmetic in whether AI furniture fits a narrow hallway.

Keeping it in the picture

Photograph the room so the radiator is clearly in frame, at eye height, on the 1x lens, and use a tool that restyles your actual photo rather than generating a room from a description. Then do the comparison that takes ten seconds and saves the whole exercise: put the render beside the original and look at the wall under the window. If the radiator is gone, the wall is longer, or a sofa is now sitting where it used to be, the layout in that image is about a different room, and the styling advice inside it is worth exactly as much as the geometry it was drawn on. Can I prompt the AI to keep the radiator?

Sometimes, and it is worth trying. Naming the object explicitly, as in keep the existing radiator under the window unchanged, works better than a general instruction to preserve the room, because it gives the model a specific thing to hold. What you cannot fix with a prompt is a tool that rebuilds the scene from scratch. If the radiator comes back in a different place, at a different width, or with the wrong number of panels, the model is drawing a radiator rather than keeping yours.

Is a render useful for choosing between a horizontal and a vertical radiator?

For the look, yes, and that is a genuinely good use of it, because the choice is mostly about how much wall you are prepared to give up and how the proportion sits against a window. For the heat, no. A vertical radiator that occupies less wall usually delivers fewer watts unless you go to a larger or higher output model, and the output figure is the one number a picture cannot contain. Pick the shape in the render, then confirm the watts for that room before ordering.

The render put a sofa in front of the radiator and it looks fine. Is it?

It looks fine because a photograph cannot show cold. A sofa back across a radiator blocks the convection path, so the heat rises into the upholstery instead of into the room, and if the valve is behind the sofa arm the radiator will also shut itself off early. If the layout only works with the sofa there, pull it 25 to 30 cm off the wall and check the valve is in open air. That gap is invisible in a render and obvious in January.
